Elton John says ‘I can’t see anything’ in heartbreaking health update
Sir Elton John issued an update on his health after revealing he had lost his eyesight.
The singer, 77, appeared on Good Morning America alongside his husband David Furnish to promote his new project.
Sir Elton sat with down Robin Roberts to talk about his life, career and the personal challenges featured in his new documentary. The Grammy award-winning musician lost sight in his right eye after it became infected while in the South of France during the summer.
The I’m Still Standing hitmaker said: “I unfortunately lost my eyesight in my right eye in July because I had an infection in the South of France and it’s been four months now since I haven’t been able to see.
“And my left eye is not the greatest, so. There’s hope and encouragement that it will be okay and we’re taking an initiative to try and get it better. At the moment that’s really what we’re concentrating on.”
In a heartbreaking confession, he added: “It’s never fortunate for anything like this to happen. I can’t see anything, I can’t read anything, I can’t watch anything.”
Despite the ongoing struggles with his eyesight, Sir Elton admitted his health has “never been better” as he put his fans at ease.
The Rocket Man hitmaker said: “Well, David and I always have blood tests every six months in Los Angeles [and] our health has never been better.”
Sir Elton, who played his final shows last summer, revealed he had issues with his eyesight in September.
He took to his Instagram with a lengthy post, writing: “Over the summer, I’ve been dealing with a severe eye infection that has unfortunately left me with only limited vision in one eye.
“I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye. I am so grateful for the excellent team of doctors and nurses and my family, who have taken such good care of me over the last several weeks.”
The star concluded: “I have been quietly spending the summer recuperating at home, and am feeling positive about the progress I have made in my healing and recovery thus far.”
On December 1, the iconic singer was spotted at a showing of The Devil Wears Prada in London’s West End with his spouse. However, he had to leave the performance prematurely due to his vision issues and was escorted out by David.
While at the theatre, he shared with the audience: “I’ve lost my eyesight and cannot see the stage.” He continued: “As some of you may know I have had issues and now I have lost my sight.
“I haven’t been able to see the performance but I have enjoyed it. To my husband who’s been my rock because I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews… it’s hard for me to see it but I love to hear it and it sounded good tonight OK. Thank you for coming!”
